Gleaner Engineers began to work on a much larger Conventional combine, which was given the model designation of "635", It had a separator width of 63.5 inches and was designed to be a "super" conventional combine much bigger then the Gleaner "L" Combine. The basic design for the "635" was based on the Model "G" Gleaner's design with closed concaves and open bottom Walkers. Later on these Walkers were changed in the "L" Gleaner to increase capacity.
The "635" combine had six Walkers and the cylinder was 54 inches wide or 10 inches wider then the Gleaner "G". The combine ended up being much wider then intended, making for it to be a difficult combine for transport on narrow roads. The 635 required bigger tires, and overall the "635" was 24 inches wider then the "L" Gleaner. The "635" had steering controls on the back and special transmission gears to allow the combine to be driven in reverse at speeds up to 40KPH. The "635" combine prototype was powered by a 350 cubic inch Chevy gas engine with about 120HP. Test shows that the Gleaner "Super Conventional" combine could not be increased in size without widening the machine. Gleaner engineers realized that the Conventional Gleaner combine design had reached it's limits.
Had The "635" made it into production, its hard to say what model designation the combine would have actually had if it reached production. Also it must have been pretty interesting for the Gleaner engineers who drove the "635" combine in reverse speeds of up to 40KPH.
Gleaner would eventually have a "Super Conventional" combine when they brought out the Gleaner C62 in 1998.

I remember that in the AC book. The pics of it was a beast. This also got them into thinking of a Rotary set up. Since they was wanting more capacity. And found the limits of a cylinder.

Yes, the "635" Gleaner combine was a beast of a machine, I have the same AC book that shows that experimental combine. It would have been the Super Conventional Combine. Bet if the width of the machine wasn't an issue it would have made production. I am guessing the bin capacity would have been over 200+ if released, and likely it probably could have handled a 12 row corn head maybe. But the width was the issue with that machine. Guessing had the "635" entered production, the engine option probably would have been changed to just a Diesel. I could not see that big of a conventional machine with a gas engine. You definitely would not get a Hillside version off of it.

In 1967 Gleaner had the 635 working on my dad's ranch in South Dakota. They made a number of field modification there in Dad's yard. After working on a crew in 1968 and 1969 I interned at the Gleaner Independence factor in 1970. During that summer we took the 635 to Montana and I drove it for the engineers to do efficiency testing. I remember them asking me to crowd the machine as much as possible. Even at the fastest speed in 2nd gear it would not slow down in the separator. It seems like the sickle was the limiting factor for speed.
