Always wondered why the Gleaner "A" combine was sold in Britain painted Orange, instead of the traditional Silver color? I am an Allis Chalmers fan myself, so I have nothing against the Orange paint, they look pretty sharp to be honest. Yes, these Orange Gleaner "A's did have the name Gleaner on them, along with the name Allis Chalmers as well, but am curious as to why they were not painted Silver? If I recall, the British Gleaner "A" combine was a bit longer in length and the straw Walker area was different to allow for the heavy straw to run through the machine, given the fact Wheat yields over seas are a lot better over there then in North America, even today in some cases. I am trying to find out more about these Orange Gleaner A's for the British market, and how close or similar they were to their Independent Mo built sister combine. Where were these combines built in Britain?

Hi their i have some answers. They were built at Essendine a small village in the county of Rutland. The factory closed in about 1970. I have owned a few British Gleaners Lovely combines. I just restore them and show them i have had 7 i think. I still own a working model A with long straw walkers good combine. Also a non working very rare model C that i will fix one day hopefully soon. The combines never really changed a massive amount. They had perkins engines, the model A had a 4 speed box. The later ones had a square back. The last one was the called the Allis Chalmers 5000. I dont think it carried the Gleaner name though i might be wrong. The 5000 was basically a model C with some added extras like an open concave with a rubber belt to carry the crop on to the raddle. This was expensive to fix and they are a very rare machine today.
